Originally piloted in 3 hospitals in 2009, the EPA’s Green Healthcare Programme became fully operational in 2010, expanding to 18 facilities in total across the entire country. At a review of the programme at the EPA’s headquarters, potential savings identified by the programme to date were presented. For the 16 facilities for which data has been processed, this stands at:

  • A potential of €1.075 million savings from food waste prevention through reducing un-served food.
  • A potential of up to €210,000 savings from reductions in unused condiments (single portion sugars, jams, etc.)
  • A potential of up to €170,000 savings from increased recyclables diversion.
  • A potential of up to €450,000 savings from diversion of non-risk items from clinical risk waste bags.
